MATERIALS IN BODY JEWELRY? |
-The
type of metal used in producing body jewelry is of great |
importance. |
The
metal must be as hypo-allergy free as possible. It shall |
be
unaffected by contact with body fluids and tissue, water, |
oils
and other lubricants, soaps, shampoos, etc. |
Body
jewelry metal should be polished to a high mirror finish |
which
will not tarnish or corrode. |
The
finished surface should be virtually non-porous, |
which
will help retard the growth of bacteria and germs. |
Medical industry has tested these materials to be suitable for |
implants. |
The
ideal materials which meet all of the above listed |
requirements
are: |
-Surgical steel
is
great metal for use in the body. |
Be
aware that there exist many different grades of the |
“surgical steel”. |
The
jewelry we sell and insert in new piercings |
are of
the cleanest and best grade of surgical steel available. |
It is
medical permanent implantation steel, |
as the
parts surgeons insert to last a lifetime in the injured |
body. |
Steel
does have small percentage nickel in it, but the other |
material it is mixed with (Molybdenum) binds nickel so that it |
will
not be released to the body from the jewelry. |
-Niobium
and Titanium are beautiful colorful alternatives. |
The
coloring on the Titanium and Niobium jewelry tends to |
fade
in time. |
Titanium is light weight, making it ideal material for large |
jewelries. |
-18 karat (or higher grade) Gold, White Gold
and |
Platinum
meet the requirements. |
-Acrylic /Plastics
are used on some jewelry types as well |
We do
not use or recommend any Silver or Gold Plated |
jewelry for any piercings. |
Those
are simply not good enough materials to be worn |
permanently in piercing. |
They
tend to cause allergic reactions, delayed healing and skin |
irritations. |
Once
you have selected the style jewelry you want, |
the
piercer will determine the appropriate |
shape,
thickness (gauge) and diameter (width/size). |
Correct measurements are necessary for proper healing and |
healthy
piercing! |
